Green, Donald A.

Donald A. Green, 81, of Old Forge and formerly of Newport, NY, died November 16, 2008, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a resident for the past two weeks.

Don was born on March 10, 1927 in Utica, NY, the son of Arthur and Bessie Pierce Green.  He graduated from Poland Central School, and was a Seaman 1st Class in the US Navy during World War II.  He was a lifetime member and Past Commander of West Canada Valley Post #1524 American Legion. 

In July of 1954, he married Mary Bernadette Wald in St. Mary's Church, Utica, NY. 

In 1959, Don was appointed Game Protector for NYS Conservation Dept. in Herkimer County.  He retired in 1978 as Lieutenant of Region VI Dept. of ENCON. 

Donald leaves his wife, Bernadette; five sons, Don Jr. of Reseda, CA, David of Tampa, FL, Douglas of Old Forge, NY, Darryl and Mary of Liberty Township, OH, and Dennis and Beth of Bennington, NH; three daughters, Beth Anne Weibel of Barneveld, NY, Barbara Harrington and Matt Martin of Old Forge, NY, and Marianne Green and John Schwendy of Lowville, NY.  He also leaves his grandchildren, Russel and Amy Weibel, Molly and Jessie Harrington, Jeromey and Riley Green, Alexandra and Victoria Green, and Scout and Sawyer Schwendy.  He is also survived by two sisters, Marion Jones of Vestal, NY, and Beverly Brenning of Poland, NY; as well as several nephews and nieces.  Don was predeceased by his parents, and by his sister, Eleanor Paine of Barneveld, NY. 

Calling hours are Friday from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 128 Fern Ave, Old Forge.  Funeral services will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at St. Bartholomew's Church, Old Forge.  Burial will be in North Gage Cemetery, at the convenience of the family. 

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials in Don's name to a charity of your choice, or to the North Gage Church and Cemetery Association.

This is my 2nd message - 1st did not go thru? Our prayers and hearts are with you, Bernadette. As we read Don's ob, we identified with much of your family life. We have 7 sons & 2 daughters - one of which we lost. We enjoyed reading your recent column in the ADK paper. Keep up the writing - I believe it is therapeutic.
